Spanish

At Bourton Meadow we nurture every child to fulfil their whole potential.

At Bourton Meadow, we are incredibly lucky to have the expertise of Mrs Nunez – a native-speaking Spanish teacher. Although we are only required to teach a modern foreign language in Key Stage Two, we are very proud to offer weekly Spanish lessons to all of our children, from Nursery to Year 6. This early exposure to the language and gradual progression of skills ensures that children leave Bourton Meadow with a strong foundation in the language, enabling them to access the secondary curriculum and develop and apply their skills within Spanish, as well as the other languages which may be taught.

We offer a bespoke Spanish curriculum, which is based around five key strands:
Listening
Speaking
Reading
Writing
Intercultural Understanding

Knowledge is built gradually with regular and planned opportunities to practise, embed and retrieve vocabulary, helping children to retain this knowledge. The Spanish alphabet and simple grammatical forms are also taught, enabling children to build sentences with growing confidence and accuracy.

Children look forward to their Spanish lessons because they develop their understanding of the language through a wide range of practical activities. The curriculum also enables them to learn about Spanish-speaking countries, increasing their curiosity of the wider world and developing their cultural capital.

Here are the end goals for our Spanish curriculum

Because I went to Bourton Meadow Academy:

I appreciate the value in being able to speak a foreign language
I know where Spanish is spoken and why it is a useful language
I understand and respect the differences between the cultures of Britain and other countries
I can respond appropriately to conversational questions posed to me in Spanish
