Computing

At Bourton Meadow we nurture every child to fulfil their whole potential.

At Bourton Meadow, we recognise that our children are growing up in a digital world, which is rapidly advancing. It is important that they gain the knowledge and skills to enable them to utilise computers and digital technology in their own lives – both at home and at work. As well as recognising the benefits of technology, children also learn about its limitations and the need to use it responsibly and safely.

We use Purple Mash as the core of our computing curriculum as this enables us to plan lessons that build on children’s prior learning and ensure that there is clear progression in the knowledge and skills that children learn as they move through the school.

The computing curriculum has three strands:
Computer Science (coding or programming and problem solving)
Information Technology (spreadsheets, presentations and manipulating graphics)
Digital Literacy (E-safety and selecting the most appropriate digital content)

Skills within these three strands are taught through a range of engaging topics which the children enjoy – either through the use of ipads within the classroom or in our fully-equipped computer suite.

Knowledge and skills learnt through the computing curriculum are also consolidated and applied through the wider curriculum.

Here are the end goals for our Computing curriculum

Because I went to Bourton Meadow Academy:

I can design, write and debug programs that accomplish different goals
I can use sequence, selection and repetition in programs, use a range of variables and various forms of input and output
I can use logical reasoning to explain how some simple algorithms work and to detect and correct errors
I understand computer networks, including the internet and the opportunities they offer for communication and collaboration
I can use search technologies effectively, appreciate how results are selected and ranked and be discerning in evaluating digital content
I can select, use and combine a variety of software on a range of digital devices to design and create a range of programs, systems and content that accomplish given goals, including collecting, analysing, evaluation and presenting data and information
I can use technology safely, respectfully and responsibly, recognise acceptable and unacceptable behaviour, and know how to report concern about content and contact
