Timetable - PE and Games

All children in Year 3 have one P.E and one Games lesson per week. This is a statutory requirement as part of the curriculum.

Children must wear appropriate PE kit for these lessons.  Please ask the school office for a uniform list if you are unsure of what your child should be wearing.

All earrings must be either taken out or taped and long hair must be tied up.

Please ensure that if your child requires medication it is in date, it is clearly labelled with your child’s name and there is a care plan.

3DM- Games on Wednesday and PE on Friday

Curriculum coverage, including themes

Our theme for this term is Chocolate; therefore lessons will be linked to chocolate, when possible.

In English, we are focussing on the book ‘Charlie and the chocolate factory’ by Roald Dahl.

Throughout the school there is a big ‘push’ on handwriting and presentation. Continuous cursive handwriting (by Debbie Hepplewhite) has been introduced and all children will be focusing on learning how to form their letters correctly before joining them.  Please refer to for more information and free supporting resources.

In Year 3, children are organised in sets for maths lessons.  All groups will cover the national curriculum objectives; however, the pace and support provided will vary between them.  All lessons are planned and tailored to children’s individual learning needs and will support them to deepen their understanding.

Please note that if a teacher is planning to move a child to another maths group, parents will be informed prior to this happening.

All of the Year 3 teachers would encourage children to spend time learning their times tables, ensuring they are confident with their 2,5 and 10 times tables and division facts, before progressing to their 3,4 and 8 times tables and division facts.

In science we will cover:

  • Plants
  • Magnets and springs
  • Light and shadow
  • Eating, moving and growing
  • Rocks and soils
  • Question, explore, test, evidence, findings, evaluate

In theme lessons throughout Year 3 we will cover:

  • Geographical skills – using maps, atlases and globes to locate countries and continents.
  • Physical geography – climates, rivers, world landmarks.
  • Human geography – Land use and settlement, trade links, distribution of energy and food.
  • History – chocolate, the Egyptians, Stone Age.
  • DT/art – primary/secondary colours, themed art.
  • Music – Whole Class Practical Musicianship.

Spellings will be set for children on a Thursday.  The ACE spelling system follows a 3 week process.  The word maps your child produces will be discussed in class and they will have a spelling test at the end of 3 weeks.  All spellings are taken from your child’s current theme or from the curriculum word list for Year 3.

Class teachers may also decide to set their class times tables to focus on, as and when they feel this is appropriate.

At Bourton Meadow we encourage healthy eating; therefore, please ensure that your child has a healthy snack for break times, water in a named bottle to drink throughout the day and a healthy packed lunch.  Hot dinners are also available to order.  Please contact the school office if you would like more information on how to do this.

Helping at home

It is fantastic that we have such supportive parents at Bourton Meadow, who are often asking how they can support their child at home.  We would always encourage children to practise their spelling rules and times tables, as well as ensuring they are reading regularly.

School uniform

Please ensure school uniform is named, as often items can be misplaced and if these are not labelled then it can be difficult for them to be returned to their owner.

At Bourton Meadow we have an ‘open door’ policy and encourage parents and carers to communicate with staff.  If you would like to contact your child’s teacher then you can email:, talk to them at the end of the day, talk over the phone or schedule an appointment for a longer meeting.

Online Safety

At school we often discuss online safety with the children and would actively encourage you to do the same with your child at home.

Some points to consider may be:

  • Who - who are my children talking to online?
  • What - what are they doing online?
  • Where - where are my children going online?

Explore these questions with your children to maximise dialogue, support your children, set rules and boundaries whilst they are the internet.

Support is always available from the following websites:

Pupil Premium

If you feel your child may qualify for Pupil Premium then please talk to a member of staff, in confidence.
